Used Tesla buying guide: hardware generations, warranties, and what changed for 2026
The EV math is upside down in an interesting way: a new EV costs more than a comparable gas car, but a used EV can be significantly cheaper, and there are certain additional things you should know if you want to get a used Tesla. Since I filmed this, 3 big things changed: the used-EV tax credit is gone, FSD went subscription-only, and the Model S and X ended production. Every change is marked below.
Why a used Tesla is the EV bargain
Progressive's numbers say the average car loses about 20 percent of its value in year 1 and 15 percent per year after that until year 5; Teslas and other EVs have been losing as much as 25 percent year over year. That is the opportunity: in September 2024 the average 1 to 5 year old EV dropped to a near record low of $27,886, about $3,000 less than a similarly aged gas vehicle, even while Kelley Blue Book had the average new EV costing $8,000 more than the average new gas car.
The cause was Tesla itself. In 2023 alone Tesla cut prices around 25 percent on average; a Long Range all-wheel drive Model Y was about $67,000 in 2022 and sat at $48,000 when I filmed this. Frustrating for existing customers and definitely excessive, but every one of those cuts flowed straight into the used market.
Update, July 2026: the new-car anchors moved again. Tesla's cheapest new cars are now the Model 3 Standard at $36,990 and the Model Y Standard at $39,990, so weigh any used quote against those numbers before you call it a deal.
Which used Tesla should you buy?
There are 4 Tesla models you will likely shop used: the S, 3, X, and Y. Most likely, the 3 and Y will be the best bang for your buck, and most of this guide is aimed at them; the S and X homework is below.
Update, July 2026: the S and X are now used-only. Tesla ended their production in the first half of 2026 with a 350-unit Signature Series send-off, pledging parts and service support indefinitely. The used market is the only market for those cars now.
Autopilot hardware generations, decoded
Self-driving features have changed a lot over the years, and on an older car it can be hard to tell exactly what you are getting, especially from a third party. The timeline: from September 2014 to October 2016, Model S and X shipped with an Autopilot 1.0 computer made by Mobileye, still great for basic lane keeping and cruise control, listed as "autopilot with convenience features." In October 2016 Tesla switched to their own internally developed system, with 2.5 following in August 2017. Hardware 3.0 arrived in March 2019 and shipped for many years. January 2023 brought Hardware 4.0, also known as AI4: higher resolution cameras, a redesigned wiring harness, and a 3 to 5 times improvement in processing power.
The floor, as I stated it in 2024: to use the FSD package or receive future updates you needed computer 2.0 or higher, and every Model 3 and Y ever produced shipped with 2.5 or later.
Update, July 2026: treat that future-updates promise with more care than the video did. Tesla's newest FSD builds target Hardware 4 first, HW3's long-term path is unresolved, and the free computer upgrade that came with buying FSD is moot now that FSD cannot be purchased outright. Autopilot vs. Enhanced Autopilot vs. FSD on a used car
Almost all used Teslas include basic Autopilot at no charge: traffic-aware cruise control, which matches your speed to traffic, and Autosteer, which helps keep you in your lane; they make manual driving easier, not hands-off. Full Self-Driving is designed from the ground up to completely drive the car for you, and it is not quite there yet, so it requires active supervision. The package grew to include Navigate on Autopilot, auto lane change, Autopark, Summon and Smart Summon, and traffic light and stop sign control, today all comprised into FSD (Supervised). At filming, FSD ran $8,000 one-time or $99 a month.
Enhanced Autopilot is the discontinued middle tier still installed on a lot of legacy cars: almost all of the FSD package minus Autosteer on city streets. At the time, an EAP car could upgrade to FSD for $2,000, a full $6,000 cheaper than buying the package. And the rule that has always mattered: FSD stays with the vehicle. Trade in your Tesla and you do not keep the software.
Update, July 2026: this section changed the most. Tesla stopped selling FSD outright on February 14, 2026 (subscription-only, $99 per month), and transfers ended for good on March 31, 2026. That flips the used math: a used car with FSD already purchased is now the only way to own it instead of renting it, which makes those listings genuinely more valuable. The $2,000 EAP upgrade is gone, but Tesla prices the subscription at $49 per month for legacy Enhanced Autopilot owners, so an EAP car still carries a real perk. And the Standard trims launched in October 2025 shipped without Autosteer at all, so on recent used cars, confirm what is on the screen before you assume.
Range and battery degradation
Your primary concern on a used Tesla is likely range. The EPA number is just an estimate; real world range is pretty much always lower, depending on how fast you drive, the outside temperature, and even how much AC you use. Degradation is the good news: per Tesla's own data, the average Model 3 or Y loses only about 15 percent of its original capacity by 200,000 miles, the S and X about 12 percent.
My personal buying rule: aim for a vehicle with a starting range of at least 250 to 260 miles. There were over 60,000 Tesla Superchargers worldwide when I filmed this, so it is very doable to get most places with a lower-range car; you will just stop and charge more often.
Build quality by era
Compared to most other automakers, Tesla is still an extremely young company, and it shows by era. My first Model Y was a 2020 model year among the first 2,200 built, and it came with a number of quality control issues that were not acceptable, especially considering how much more it cost at the time. There are probably plenty of low-VIN Model 3s and Ys out there with the rattles, squeaks, or panel gaps those years are known for.
These are not, and most of the time should not be, deal breakers; these will still likely be great cars. Do the standard used-car diligence on top: check for damage or flaws from the previous owner, like paint scratches, a damaged interior, or any signs of an accident.
Tesla model years don't mean what you think
Tesla is constantly tweaking their cars during production, so 2 cars within the same model year can have changes and improvements made at any time. Model year matters less here than at any other brand: every Model 3 produced between 2017 and 2021 used the exact same screen and basic computer, so cars across those years feel pretty similar.
The 2021 refresh is the checklist to memorize: double-paned windows for less road noise, an updated center console replacing chrome trim with black, a heat pump for more efficient climate control, and a power trunk, which is a really nice convenience if you are picking between a newer and older model. Beyond small changes it is pretty much the same car: an early-VIN 3 or Y might have extra bumps or rattles, but on a fundamental level it will not feel too much different from a brand new one.
The Highland Model 3 and the refreshes since
In early 2024 Tesla introduced a totally refreshed Model 3, the Highland, that changed the car on a fundamental level: big improvements to interior and exterior build quality and big upgrades in ride comfort and performance. When I filmed this there were not a ton of used refreshed Model 3s on the market, and my example deal was a Long Range all-wheel drive with under 25,000 miles at $37,500 in Los Angeles, a full $10,000 under new and less than a year old.
Update, July 2026: the scarcity is over. Used Highlands are common, the refreshed Juniper Model Y (2025) has built a used tier of its own, and Tesla added new Standard trims in October 2025. Cross-shop deliberately: a loaded used car can land near a new Standard's price, and that is exactly the comparison to run. Incentives: what still exists in 2026
This video leaned on a federal incentive that no longer exists, so here is the history and the current state. Through September 30, 2025, EVs at least 2 years old and sold by a dealer for less than $25,000 qualified for a federal credit at the point of sale: 30 percent of the sale price, up to $4,000. My example at the time was a 2020 Model 3 at $23,700 that came down to $19,700 with the credit, before any local incentives.
Update, July 2026: that credit died on September 30, 2025, the same day as the $7,500 new-EV credit, so the under-$25,000-minus-$4,000 math no longer works. What survives is state and local: programs like New Jersey's Charge Up (up to $4,000 at point of sale) and New York's Drive Clean (up to $2,000) still run, with caps and rules that mostly target new EVs, plus utility rebates that vary by zip code. Check your state, and assume nothing federal.
The longevity pitch attached to that example still stands: the average Tesla battery should last well over 200,000 miles, and Elon Musk has talked about these cars being designed to last 300,000 to 500,000 miles. A car with a lot of life left for around $20,000 is still findable; you just get there on depreciation alone now.
Model S and X homework: MCU1 vs. MCU2
If you are interested in a used Model S or X, the situation is a bit more complicated, with at least 1 major refresh since the Model S was introduced. Units built before 2018 came with the first generation media control unit, MCU1; in 2018 Tesla started adding MCU2, with better performance and future proofing for software updates. Tesla still updates older MCUs, albeit much less frequently, and at the time of the video offered a $2,000 retrofit. Update, July 2026: with S and X production over, this homework is permanent, and used values on both have reportedly firmed since the discontinuation announcement, so do not expect deep discounts on good examples.
Where to buy, and the warranty stack
Most places and dealers do not have a ton of understanding of exactly what features come with your car; Carvana and many of the popular used car sites often lack Autopilot and FSD detail. The workarounds: look up the VIN or the car's date of construction to see what came standard, and in person, manually check what features show in the screen's settings.
Many feel it is easiest and best to buy directly from Tesla, because the listings lay out the trim, exactly which software features are included, and the full warranty. As stated in the video: battery and drive unit coverage of 8 years or 100,000 miles on rear-wheel drive Model 3 and Y (minimum 70 percent battery retention), 8 years or 120,000 miles on other 3 and Y trims, and 150,000 miles on the S, X, and Cybertruck; a 4 year or 50,000 mile basic warranty; and a used vehicle limited warranty adding 1 year or 10,000 miles after the basic expires, running from your delivery date if it is already up. Verify current terms on Tesla's site, but that structure is why Tesla-direct is the default recommendation.
Ownership costs: maintenance and charging setup
Since Teslas are fully electric, they are very easy to maintain by comparison: no oil changes, fuel system maintenance, spark plugs, emissions tests, or timing belts, and comparatively little can go wrong with these simple electric motors. Most owners will have low maintenance costs. My used-buyer prep item from the video description: a compact spare for the Model Y or Model 3, since no Tesla ships with one; the rest is in the accessories guide.
Charging is the homework for first-time EV owners. Home charging is usually the most convenient and cheapest way to fill up, but it may require an install: at minimum a NEMA 14-50 plug, usually inexpensive, with the real costs coming only if you have to upgrade your panel. A standard outlet with the mobile connector is very slow, likely too slow for most people. Publicly, many third-party chargers are still of questionable quality, so you are pretty much only going to want Tesla's Supercharger network: pricier than home charging, still almost always cheaper than a gas station. A rare used-market bonus: some older cars carried unlimited free Supercharging, but very few of those are around.
My warranty optimization rule to close. If you drive a lot day to day, buy lower mileage even if the car is older; if you do not drive much, buy as new as possible to maximize your warranty. And remember the through-line: software updates come to these cars across the board, so buying a used Tesla is not too far off from what it is like to buy a new one.
